Frequently Asked Questions About Auto Insurance in Ontario
If you’re driving in Ontario, it is mandatory third-party liability coverage. This coverage will protect you in the event that someone is injured or their property is damaged because of an accident where you’ve been deemed at fault. It’s just one way to make sure you’re prepared for the unexpected.
Your driving history is a key factor in determining your auto insurance rate. If you have been convicted of a driving offence, it will stay on your driving record for three years. This will be reflected in higher rates when you renew your policy. After three years, the conviction will drop off of your driving record and your rate will reflect this – with the same three-year rule applying.
There are many factors that can impact your car insurance rates in Ontario:
- The make and model of the car you drive
- Your driving history
- The length of time you’ve maintained your auto insurance policy
- Where you live, based on your postal code
- You driving record
Other variables, like your payment history, can also affect your rates. Keep these in mind when you’re shopping around for car insurance.
If you happen to be involved in a car accident in Ontario, remain at the scene and check for injuries. Ensuring the health and safety of those involved should always be your first priority. If anyone looks to be suffering from an injury, call 9-1-1 immediately.
Make sure to exchange driver’s licence and insurance information with the other driver(s) and gather evidence, including pictures and witness contact information, that may be useful to your auto insurance provider. In situations where there have been injuries, and/or the damages look to exceed $2000, you are legally required to call the police.
Contact your insurance company and provide them with the details of the accident. Read more here

Optional Types of Coverage for Auto Insurance
The options below allow you to customize your auto insurance plan to better suit your specific needs.
Collision Or Upset Insurance
Collision insurance covers you when you get into a car accident with another object, or your vehicle rolls over. This also protects you if you hit something other than another vehicle. Protect yourself from the financial burden an accident can bring, by adding collision insurance to your auto policy
All Perils Insurance
All perils auto insurance covers you for any and all potential risks, even if they aren’t listed in your auto insurance policy.
Statutory Benefit
Statutory benefit is included in all standard auto insurance policies in Ontario. This pays for benefits not covered by OHIP in the case of injury from an auto accident. This covers many things, including income replacement, medical and rehabilitation benefits, or even death and funeral costs.
Specified Perils
Specified perils pay only for the losses that are specifically listed in your auto insurance policy. These include car fire, theft, or attempted theft, damage to your vehicle from natural disaster, explosion, hail, lightning, rising water and more.
Third party liability Auto insurance
All Ontario drivers are required to carry at least $200,000 in third party liability auto insurance. This protects you in the event of an accident where you are found legally responsible for damage or injury to others and ensures you are not left paying out of pocket. The higher the limit, the more protection you have.
Comprehensive Auto Insurance
Comprehensive insurance covers the cost of your vehicle if it’s stolen or damaged from something other than an accident. This will cover damage caused by theft, natural disasters, animals, fire, water, falling objects, civil disturbances or vandalism.
No Fault Auto Coverage
This simply means that if you’re injured or your car is damaged from an accident, you deal with your own insurance company, no matter who is at fault. You don’t have to go after the “at-fault” driver for compensation for your losses.
Rental Car Insurance
If you happen to be involved in an accident, your car is undrivable, rental car insurance will give you peace of mind, knowing that you can still get around while your vehicle is being repaired. At the time of a claim, you’ll feel better knowing how you’ll still get to work.
